CCTV Cameras — Dome vs Bullet
The camera decides what you see. Pick the right body style for each spot so you never regret placement.
What it is
A CCTV camera captures video and sends it over cable (or Wi-Fi) to a recorder. The three common body styles are Dome (round, ceiling-mount), Bullet (tube, wall-mount), and PTZ (motorised).
Resolution (2MP, 4MP, 5MP) sets image clarity; night vision (IR range in metres) sets how far it sees in the dark.
How it works
- 1Camera sensor captures light through the lens.
- 2Signal travels down coaxial (RG-59) or CAT6 cable to the DVR/NVR.
- 3Recorder writes the stream onto a surveillance hard drive.
- 4You watch live or playback via a monitor or phone app.
Best fit for
Wide angle, discreet, hard to tamper with. Great for shop interiors, lobbies, corridors.
IP66 weatherproof, longer IR (25–40 m). Ideal for gates, driveways, boundary walls.
Upgrade to 4MP/5MP only at the counter, entry door, or gate — not every spot.
Key specs to check
- Resolution: 2MP is fine for most; 4MP+ at critical spots.
- IR range: 20 m indoor, 30–40 m outdoor gates.
- IP rating: IP66 or higher for outdoor.
- Warranty: 2 years for Hikvision/Dahua camera.
When you can skip it
- You already have a good view of that spot from another camera — overlap wastes storage.
- The area is very dark and you have no plan for lighting or a Colour-Night camera.
Common mistakes
- Putting a dome outdoors — the housing traps heat and shortens IR life.
- Pointing a bullet directly at the sun or at a strong bulb — sensor blooms.
- Buying 5MP everywhere — bandwidth and storage triple with little practical gain.
