CAT6 Cable — When you need network cable, not coax
CAT6 carries video + power for IP cameras (PoE) up to 100 m on a single cable. Coax still wins for long analog runs.
What it is
A twisted-pair copper cable rated for gigabit network speeds. In CCTV it connects IP cameras to an NVR or PoE switch.
'Solid copper' is required — CCA (copper-clad aluminium) fails PoE at long distances.
How it works
- 1PoE switch or NVR sends 48 V DC on unused pairs.
- 2Camera powers itself and returns video on the data pairs.
- 3One cable = install and service become far simpler.

Key specs to check
- Solid copper conductor (not CCA).
- 23 AWG for outdoor runs, 24 AWG for indoor.
- Outdoor/UV rated jacket if any part is exposed to sun.
- Length ≤ 100 m per run.
When you can skip it
- Retrofitting where coax is already in place and works — reuse it with an analog HD DVR.
- Distances beyond 100 m without an extender — coax handles 300 m natively.
Common mistakes
- Buying CCA labelled as 'copper' — cheaper but PoE current drops out.
- Coiling excess cable in a tight loop near the switch — causes signal issues.
