DVR vs NVR — Which recorder should you buy?
DVRs record from analog HD cameras over coax. NVRs record from IP cameras over network cable. Both are fine — the trick is matching the recorder to the cameras.
What it is
DVR (Digital Video Recorder) — connects to analog HD (HD-TVI/CVI/AHD) cameras via BNC/coax cable. Cheaper cameras, simpler cabling, no network skill needed.
NVR (Network Video Recorder) — connects to IP cameras via CAT6, usually through PoE (power over the same cable). Higher resolution ceiling, smarter analytics, harder to run cables at long distances.
How it works
- 1Camera type determines the recorder type — you can't mix freely.
- 2Recorder decodes streams, writes them to a surveillance hard drive.
- 3It serves live and playback to your monitor, phone, or PC.
Best fit for
Lower total cost, easy to service locally, works with existing coax runs.
4K/8MP, license plate reading, cross-line detection, single-cable PoE runs.
Side-by-side comparison
| Feature | DVR | NVR |
|---|---|---|
| Camera type | Analog HD (coax) | IP (network) |
| Cable | RG-59 coax + 2-core power | CAT6 (single cable via PoE) |
| Max resolution (typical) | 5 MP | 8 MP / 4K |
| Cost per channel | Lower | Higher |
| Long-distance runs | Up to 300 m over coax | 100 m over CAT6 (extender needed beyond) |
Key specs to check
- Channels — buy one tier above current camera count (leave room to expand).
- H.265+ compression — halves storage need.
- HDD bays — 1 bay handles up to 6 TB comfortably.
- Warranty: 2 years for Hikvision/Dahua recorder.
When you can skip it
- Don't buy an NVR just because it's newer — if you have coax runs already, a DVR is cheaper and easier.
- Avoid mixing IP and analog on the same recorder unless it's an explicit hybrid model.
Common mistakes
- Buying an 8-channel DVR for exactly 8 cameras — no room to add later.
- Skipping the surveillance-rated HDD — desktop drives fail in 6–12 months of 24/7 write.
